I took my inspiration for this painting from a couple of sources.
The first was the distinct rock formations found in Utah. These have been used in numerous classic John Ford westerns, and have a very dramatic feel to them.
The second was from a castle ruin on the beach in my hometown of Ayr.
Greenan Castle stands on the edge of a small steep cliff and overlooks the sea.
By combining these two images and using a rich and dramatic palette, I was able to produce a painting that emphasises the beauty and isolation of the structure.
